What is Art Psychotherapy

Art psychotherapy is a type of psychotherapy that combines verbal communication and artistic expression with the aim of improving the emotional, physical and mental health of the individual. The art therapy approach is a projective technique. The artist projects the way they perceive their internal and external reality and their relationships with others. Framing their image through their narrative and dialogue with the psychotherapist may lead to a new way of understanding their self. Within a therapeutic framework of trust and acceptance, the creator of the visual work can project and process phobias, concerns, thoughts and emotions without being limited to verbal communication. You do not need to have any previous experience or talent in art to engage in this therapeutic approach, just the curiosity and willingness to use the art materials.

The Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic approach

The present is often shaped and governed by the past. Past experiences become a tool for understanding the many interactions between the child and the key figures in his/her life - mainly his/her parents - which through dimensions such as trust or mistrust, stability or instability, pleasure or pain, punishment or reward shape personality characteristics, the sense of self, types of defence mechanisms, intensity of anxiety, conflicts, etc. Though this approach, the therapist explores with the client the mental and psychic representation of himself/herself in the world. The two of them look for connections between the client's past experiences and how they have influenced his or her subconscious and conscious mind and present relationships with others, through the therapeutic relationship. They try to make sense of and understand the content of this verbal and non-verbal information. The therapist can encourage the process of awareness with questions and help the client recognize self-defence mechanisms. He/she is there to create a safe framework, to include the client's feelings, to develop a sense of trust through confidentiality in a judgement-free environment.

Sessions are offered in Greek and English, in person or online.
